Haridwar: A recent study led by Acharya Balkrishna at Patanjali Yogpeeth has highlighted the potential of integrating yoga, pranayama, and traditional medicine in diabetes management. The research emphasizes that combining these holistic practices with modern medical care can significantly improve patient outcomes, particularly in chronic conditions like diabetes.

Released in April 2026 in Frontiers in Clinical Diabetes and Healthcare, the study reviewed data from 612 previously published research papers, reports The Hans India. The review focused on understanding how lifestyle-based interventions, including yoga exercises, breathing techniques, dietary changes, and daily routine modifications, impact diabetes management. The results showed that patients who adopted such integrative approaches experienced better blood sugar control, reduced psychological stress, and an overall improvement in their quality of life.

According to the researchers, this combined approach does not aim to replace conventional treatments but rather complements them. It offers a supportive framework, especially for individuals dealing with Type 1 diabetes, where long-term management is crucial. The study points out that while insulin therapy remains important, incorporating holistic practices can enhance its effectiveness and contribute to more stable health outcomes over time.

The findings further revealed that individuals who regularly practised yoga and pranayama, along with maintaining a balanced diet, reported noticeable improvements in both physical health and mental well-being. Reduced stress levels, improved metabolic function, and increased energy levels were among the commonly observed benefits. These results reinforce the importance of adopting a comprehensive lifestyle-based strategy rather than relying solely on medication.
