Indian medtech company Remidio Innovative Solutions Pvt. Ltd. has been granted US Patent No. 12,611,103 for a 3D imaging technology designed to make comprehensive eye examinations more portable and accessible. The patented system uses a wearable format, such as smart glasses or a VR-style headset, instead of relying entirely on conventional fixed ophthalmic equipment.

The technology is designed to bring multiple types of eye imaging into a single platform. These include slit-lamp imaging, fundus imaging, and diffuse anterior-segment imaging, which are traditionally performed using different ophthalmic instruments. By combining these capabilities, the technology could simplify imaging workflows and make eye examinations easier to perform in settings where conventional equipment may be difficult to deploy.

Another notable feature is its ability to capture images without requiring pupil dilation. The system uses infrared illumination rather than relying only on bright visible light to obtain images, including views of the back of the eye. Avoiding routine dilation could make screening more convenient for patients and potentially support wider use of eye imaging outside conventional specialist settings.

The development is also connected with Remidio's broader work in Oculomics, an emerging area that explores how information obtained from the eye, particularly retinal blood vessels and other ocular structures, may provide clues about systemic health. Retinal imaging is being studied for its potential role in identifying or assessing conditions beyond the eye, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disorders and some neurodegenerative conditions.

A wearable and dilation-free imaging platform could therefore have applications beyond conventional ophthalmology clinics. Portable imaging may be useful in primary-care settings, community screening programmes, rural healthcare, emergency departments and teleophthalmology, where access to specialist equipment and ophthalmologists can be limited. Remidio already positions its portable imaging technologies for use in primary care, rural settings and remote specialist review.

The patent adds to Remidio's existing work in portable ophthalmic imaging and digital eye-care technologies. The company has previously developed handheld retinal imaging systems and AI-based tools for eye screening. Its Fundus on Phone Non Mydriatic (FOP NM-10), for example, received a US FDA 510(k) clearance in December 2025, according to the FDA's database.

The new patent does not itself mean that the patented wearable device is approved for clinical use in every country or for every proposed application; regulatory clearance and clinical validation depend on the specific device and intended use. However, the development represents another step toward making sophisticated eye imaging more compact and potentially bringing diagnostic screening closer to patients.

For India, where specialist eye-care access can vary considerably between urban and rural areas, portable technologies that reduce dependence on large, fixed equipment could support earlier detection, screening and referral when appropriately validated and deployed within healthcare systems.
