The Cleft and Craniofacial Centre at Sree Balaji Medical College Hospital and Dr Rela Medical Centre, Chennai, has been recognised as a Comprehensive Cleft Care Reference Centre (CCRC) by Smile Train. The centre will focus on multidisciplinary cleft care while also serving as a platform for professional training, research, referrals, and knowledge sharing.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are congenital conditions in which parts of the lip or roof of the mouth do not develop normally before birth. Treatment often involves more than a single surgery and may require coordinated care at different stages of a patient's growth. Services such as surgery, orthodontics, speech and hearing care, nutrition, dental care and psychological support can therefore form part of a comprehensive treatment pathway.

The centre's programme has roots in a multidisciplinary cleft care initiative established in association with Smile Train in 2001. It has been operating from the newer facility at Sree Balaji Medical College Hospital and Dr Rela Medical Centre since 2022. The programme provides care for children with cleft conditions from birth through growth and into later stages when additional interventions may be required.

The centre brings together specialists from plastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, ENT, paediatrics, paediatric anaesthesiology, orthodontics, speech and hearing, nutrition, oral health and clinical psychology.

Its clinical services include primary procedures such as cleft lip and palate repair and alveolar bone grafting, along with secondary procedures including revision surgery, distraction osteogenesis, orthognathic surgery, treatment of velopharyngeal dysfunction, and cleft rhinoplasty. Beyond direct patient care, the new reference-centre status is intended to strengthen professional capacity through training, research and knowledge exchange. Its affiliation with Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research also supports its role as a referral and academic resource for cleft-care professionals in India and internationally.

The development reflects a broader shift in cleft care from treating the condition through surgery alone to providing long-term, multidisciplinary care throughout a patient's development. Smile Train said its partnership model in India has focused on supporting local healthcare professionals and expanding access to comprehensive cleft treatment. According to Smile Train's release, the organisation has supported more than 800,000 cleft surgeries in India over the past 25 years through its network of partner hospitals and medical professionals. The centre is expected to use its reference-centre role not only to provide specialised treatment but also to strengthen referral networks and contribute to the development of cleft-care professionals through education and research.
