Kanpur: North India’s first state-of-the-art speech and hearing institute is coming up in Kanpur and will be ready for operation by October this year.

The institute is being set up in the premises of the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College. The satellite centre of the Mysuru-based All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) will provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to people with speech and hearing disorders.

The institute will be built on the lines of AIISH, Mysuru. It will have departments of audiology, speech-language pathology, speech-language sciences, ENT, and clinical psychology.

According to Dr Sanjay Kala, Principal of GSVM Medical College, the construction work of the institute is in its final stages. "The building is expected to be completed by August and the institute will become functional by October after the installation of necessary equipment and recruitment of staff," he said.

The institute will be equipped with modern facilities for diagnosis and treatment of various speech and hearing disorders, including hearing loss, stuttering, voice disorders, and language delays. It will also offer rehabilitation services, including hearing aid fitting and cochlear implant mapping.

The setting up of the institute in Kanpur is expected to benefit a large number of people from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states who currently have to travel to Mysuru or other far-off places for specialised treatment.

The institute will also focus on research and training in the field of speech and hearing. It will offer various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in audiology and speech-language pathology.

The project is being funded by the Central government. The institute is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the growing burden of speech and hearing disorders in the region.
