The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released an updated Undergraduate MBBS Seat Matrix for the academic year 2026–27, based on approvals recorded up to 18 September 2026. The updated matrix covers MBBS courses excluding seats in Institutes of National Importance (INIs), and incorporates approvals for new medical colleges as well as increases in the intake capacity of existing institutions.

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is the primary undergraduate medical degree in India for students aspiring to become medical doctors. The course provides comprehensive education in basic medical sciences, clinical subjects, diagnosis, treatment, patient care, and practical clinical training. The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the statutory regulatory body responsible for maintaining standards of medical education, regulating medical institutions and medical professionals, and overseeing undergraduate medical education in India. NMC also approves medical colleges and their permitted MBBS intake, with admissions conducted through the applicable counselling process.

According to the updated matrix, the total approved MBBS intake stands at 140,664 seats, comprising 64,121 government seats and 76,543 private seats. The matrix covers 839 medical colleges, including 447 government and 392 private institutions. It also includes 3,850 seats associated with 41 newly established medical colleges—850 seats across 13 government colleges and 3,000 seats across 28 private colleges.

The state-wise figures show Uttar Pradesh with 14,400 MBBS seats, followed by Karnataka with 11,145, Tamil Nadu with 14,299, Maharashtra with 13,399, and Telangana with 10,500 in the updated matrix. Gujarat has 7,800 MBBS seats, including 4,250 government and 3,550 private seats.

The revised matrix incorporates permissions granted by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), NMC's First Appeal Committee and the Second Appeal Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The NMC said the matrix may be revised further depending on decisions of the relevant appeal committees or other competent authorities.

The updated seat matrix will be used by the Central and State counselling authorities for MBBS admissions. Counselling committees have been instructed not to allow admissions beyond the number of seats approved and notified by MARB. Any discrepancy in the approved matrix is to be referred to MARB for clarification.

The NMC has also directed medical colleges to verify their institutional details in the matrix and ensure that admissions for 2026–27 are made strictly within their approved annual intake. Admissions exceeding the approved capacity may be treated as non-compliance with the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and could attract regulatory and penal action.
