The Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, located in New Delhi, have expanded their diagnostic capabilities by launching a state-of-the-art Centre for Advanced Bladder Diagnostics in addition to new PETCT and SPECTCT services. The facilities were inaugurated by the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mr. J.P. Nadda, on 3rd September 2060 in an attempt to enhance accessibility to advanced diagnostic methods and help expedite timely clinical decision-making.

The Centre for Advanced Bladder Diagnostics is involved in combining Video Urodynamics (VUDS) and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)-based brain mapping. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, this combined approach has been attempted for the very first time in India. VUDS allows for a thorough assessment of bladder functions, while NIRS allows for the evaluation of changes in blood oxygenation levels in the brain during bladder filling and bladder emptying. The two technologies are found helpful in determining for physicians whether the complex bladder disorders are related largely to factors affecting the urinary system, neurological problems, or a combination of both problems.

The centre is likely to provide specialised urology diagnostic services to about 5,000 patients every year. Its services will be particularly relevant for patients with complicated bladder disorders, including cases associated with neurological conditions. The hospital has since added the facilities for PET-CT and SPECT-CT in its Department of Nuclear Medicine. PET-CT will enhance the diagnostic capabilities and treatment planning process in the field of cancer, aiding in diagnosing and staging the illness as well as in treatment planning and follow-ups. Apart from these benefits, the technology will allow for collaborative management involving experts in the fields of radiation oncology, medical oncology, paediatrics, urology, haematology and nephrology.

The SPECT-CT technology will enable nuclear medicine imaging in different areas such as cardiac, renal, endocrine, orthopaedic and gastrointestinal disorders. In total, the new nuclear medicine services are expected to cater to nearly 600 to 700 patients every year and will be provided at a reasonable cost. The addition of these facilities is expected to improve access to advanced diagnostic evaluation while supporting multidisciplinary patient care. The infrastructure will also contribute to postgraduate education and clinical training at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, while expanding access to specialised healthcare services for patients, including those from economically disadvantaged sections of society. During his visit, Shri J.P. Nadda also reviewed the Heart Command Centre and Sports Injury Centre and assessed ongoing projects at Safdarjung Hospital. He emphasised regular monitoring of projects, periodic inspections and setting practical timelines to ensure that planned healthcare infrastructure is completed on schedule.
