The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), under the Ministry of Ayush, organised the inaugural programme of the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026, focusing on dietary diversity, healthy eating practices, and adequate protein intake. The programme was organised under the aegis of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, with an emphasis on promoting informed dietary choices and better nutrition awareness.

Rashtriya Poshan Maah is observed as a month-long nutrition awareness initiative that encourages individuals and communities to understand the importance of balanced diets and healthy eating practices. As part of the 2026 observance, MDNIY is conducting educational and outreach activities focused on nutrition, including dietary diversity, protein intake, and maternal nutrition.

Dr. Jyoti Keswani, Director (Additional Charge), MDNIY, and Chief Patron of the event, administered a nutrition pledge during the inaugural programme. She highlighted the need for greater public awareness of nutritious dietary practices and healthy lifestyles.

An expert lecture on “Dietary Diversity and Adequate Protein” was delivered by Dr. Swati Jain, Scientist ‘D’, ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (ICMR-NICPR). She explained that adequate protein intake should be considered as part of an overall balanced and diverse diet.

According to the ICMR-NIN Nutrient Requirements for Indians cited during the programme, the safe protein allowance for healthy adults is 0.83 g per kg of body weight per day when the diet contains high-quality protein. For predominantly cereal-based diets with lower protein quality, the figure is 1.0 g per kg per day. Protein requirements can vary depending on age, body size, physiological state, physical activity and health status.

The programme also highlighted the importance of combining different food groups to improve dietary diversity. Pulses, dairy products, soy, nuts and seeds were suggested alongside cereals. Traditional combinations such as dal-rice, roti-chana, idli-sambar, dosa-sambar and khichdi were cited as practical examples of complementary protein sources. The discussion also highlighted affordable options such as sattu, dal, roasted chana, peanuts, and soy.

For individuals practising Yoga, the discussion emphasised that overall daily protein intake and a balanced diet are more important than concentrating only on a specific post-exercise “protein window”. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Khushbu Jain, Assistant Professor (Biochemistry), MDNIY, and conducted by Dr. Pawan Kumar, Assistant Professor (Yoga Education).

As part of the month-long observance, MDNIY is also organising a nutrition quiz, poster-making competition, nutrition awareness programme for school children and a community outreach programme on maternal nutrition and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). The observance is scheduled to conclude with a valedictory programme on 8 October 2026, featuring a poster exhibition, participant recognition, and an awareness session on Ayurvedic nutrition and healthy dietary practices.
