Patient safety is an essential component of healthcare delivery, extending beyond diagnosis and treatment to include infection prevention, accurate clinical decisions, effective communication, and continuity of care. Safe healthcare practices help reduce preventable harm, improve patient experiences, and strengthen public confidence in healthcare institutions. With the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), coordinated and continuous care has become a key priority for health systems.

On World Patient Safety Day 2026, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda addressed an event organised at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML Hospital), New Delhi, on 17 September 2026. This year’s theme, “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases", carries the slogan “Safe care for life!”

The event focused on strengthening patient safety as part of quality healthcare and health-system development. During his address, Nadda emphasised the importance of providing safe, high-quality, dignified and patient-centred care. He stated that patient safety requires coordinated efforts from doctors, nurses, paramedical professionals, technicians, administrative staff, patients and attendants.

The Minister highlighted the relationship between hospital cleanliness and patient safety, stressing the importance of hand hygiene, appropriate waste disposal, infection prevention and adherence to established safety protocols. He stated that a clean hospital environment contributes directly to infection control and safer healthcare delivery.

Nadda also highlighted government healthcare initiatives, stating that approximately 11.5 crore beneficiaries had accessed treatment worth around ₹1.6 lakh crore through Ayushman Bharat. He further stated that the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana had enabled citizens to save approximately ₹45,000 crore on medicines. The Minister also discussed efforts to expand National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification across government health facilities.

During the programme, the Quality & Safety Handbook of ABVIMS and Dr. RML Hospital was released. The handbook provides standardised operational guidance for healthcare staff to support quality improvement and adherence to patient-safety protocols.

The event also highlighted broader national efforts, including the National Patient Safety Secretariat, India Patient Safety Network and the proposed National Action Plan for Patient Safety 2030. At the institutional level, RML Hospital presented its month-long closed-loop audit campaign, “Measure, Master, Maintain: Elevate Patient Safety at Every Level,” which focuses on identifying gaps, implementing corrective measures and verifying improvements in patient-safety practices.
