Medicines play a vital role in preventing and treating diseases, but their use can sometimes lead to unwanted or unexpected effects. Pharmacovigilance focuses on identifying, assessing, understanding, and preventing adverse effects associated with medicines. Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting helps healthcare systems monitor medicine safety and generate evidence that can support clinical decisions, regulatory measures and safer patient care.

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has inaugurated the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week (NPW), being observed across India from 17 to 23 September 2026. The campaign is themed “Promoting Rational Use of Medicines through Pharmacovigilance – A Step Towards Safer Healthcare.” IPC functions as the National Coordination Centre for the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (NCC-PvPI).

The week-long initiative aims to raise awareness among healthcare professionals, researchers and the general public about the importance of reporting ADRs and encouraging broader participation in pharmacovigilance activities. The inauguration was held at the Padmashri Nitya Anand Auditorium Hall at the IPC premises in Ghaziabad.

The event was attended by representatives from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, IPC, healthcare institutions and other stakeholder organisations. Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of ICMR, highlighted the need to strengthen capacity for verifying, assessing and analysing medicine safety reports so that pharmacovigilance data can inform clinical and regulatory actions.

Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director of IPC, emphasised strengthening pharmacovigilance networks at the grassroots level. He expressed the aspiration of establishing at least one ADR Monitoring Centre (AMC) and one Medical Device Monitoring Centre (MDMC) in every Aspirational District. He also highlighted the potential use of pharmacovigilance data in supporting rational medicine use and exploring drug repurposing opportunities.

The programme included technical sessions on medication and patient safety. Prof. Sangeeta Sharma discussed the relationship between pharmacovigilance and rational medicine use, while Dr. Abdul Nasser addressed the role of the Materiovigilance Programme of India (MvPI) in strengthening patient safety. The event also featured the release of Volume 16, Issue 2 (2026) of the PvPI Newsletter.

The 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week seeks to reinforce the importance of ADR reporting and the effective utilisation of safety data to support safer and more rational use of medicines across the country.
