The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), organised a National Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on Fluorosis on the occasion of National Fluorosis Day. The meeting brought together health, water, agriculture, medical research and dental-sector stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen prevention and control of fluorosis under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Fluorosis (NPPCF).

The workshop highlighted the importance of addressing fluorosis through a coordinated public health approach rather than relying only on clinical management. Representatives from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), AIIMS, National Dental Commission (NDC), and State/UT programme teams participated in the discussions.

Fluorosis is associated with prolonged exposure to excessive levels of fluoride. Depending on the level and duration of exposure, it can affect teeth and bones, making early identification of exposure and appropriate public health intervention important for affected communities. The NPPCF focuses on surveillance, capacity building, health education, early diagnosis and management, along with interventions aimed at reducing excessive fluoride exposure.

During the inaugural session, Dr. Puspa Lata, Additional Director General, DGHS, outlined the objectives of the national programme and emphasised the importance of strengthening prevention, early detection and case management. She also highlighted the need for effective coordination between different sectors and timely sharing of information to support fluorosis control activities.

Shri Lalit Wadhwa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, stressed the importance of inter-sectoral convergence, particularly with agencies responsible for drinking water and sanitation. This coordination is important because reducing exposure to fluoride in drinking water is a key component of preventing fluorosis in areas where excessive fluoride levels are present.

A major focus of the workshop was expanding the reach and coverage of the NPPCF while improving implementation through research, innovation, and field-level learning. Participants shared experiences and practices from different States and Union Territories, creating an opportunity to identify implementation gaps and approaches that could strengthen local fluorosis prevention programmes.

The involvement of organisations working across healthcare, water management, agriculture, research and dentistry also reflected the multifaceted nature of fluorosis control. Along with identifying cases and providing appropriate care, effective prevention requires reliable surveillance, public awareness, safe drinking water interventions and cooperation between health and non-health departments.

The workshop further underlined the role of research and innovation in improving programme implementation and generating evidence for future interventions. Strengthening capacity among healthcare workers and programme teams can also support better recognition and management of fluorosis at the community level.

Through the NPPCF, the Union Health Ministry continues to focus on surveillance, awareness, early diagnosis, management, and preventive interventions. The national consultation reaffirmed the need for sustained multi-sectoral action so that communities at risk can receive timely information, appropriate healthcare and support to reduce exposure to excessive fluoride.
