India has administered more than 80 lakh (8 million) doses of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine under its National HPV Vaccination Campaign, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen cervical cancer prevention. The national campaign was launched in February 2026 to provide free and voluntary single-dose HPV vaccination to 14-year-old girls, with parental consent, through government health facilities.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of cervical cancer, which is a major, prevalent cancer affecting women in India. The HPV vaccine acts as a preventive measure for cancer before it affects girls. Most commonly, girls between the ages of 9 and 16 years can get the vaccine to significantly reduce the risk of cancer in later life.

Around 1.2 crore girls are estimated to form the annual cohort of 14-year-olds who could benefit from the programme. Several states have made significant progress in reaching their identified target populations. Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram have reported 100% coverage, while Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Assam have crossed 90%. Karnataka has achieved more than 85% coverage, while Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, Kerala, Telangana and Odisha have crossed 60%.

In Uttar Pradesh, a number of immunisations have been done, with the figure amounting to over 22 lakh adolescent girls getting vaccinated under the campaign. Various actions by the state and district health teams alongside community and public health system campaigns have made it possible to cover all that needs to be covered, including rural areas.

Raising awareness about the HPV vaccine has also been one of the tasks of the campaign. Parents, teachers, and health care workers have been engaged in explaining reliable information and addressing worries about the vaccine. Digital monitoring is another component of the programme. The U-WIN platform is being used to monitor vaccination coverage, identify gaps and missed beneficiaries, and support district-level planning and resource allocation. Vaccination sessions are conducted under the supervision of trained medical officers at government health facilities.

Safety monitoring has also been incorporated into the campaign. Government facilities are linked with 24×7 healthcare arrangements for the assessment and management of rare Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI). This provides a mechanism for timely evaluation and appropriate care if an adverse event is reported following vaccination.

The national campaign builds on the growing global use of HPV vaccines, with more than 800 million doses distributed worldwide. HPV vaccination has increasingly become part of national immunisation programmes across countries at different income levels, reflecting its role in long-term cervical cancer prevention.

With the campaign progressing, health authorities are focusing on reaching remaining eligible beneficiaries and improving coverage across states and districts. The milestone of 80 lakh doses represents a significant step in expanding preventive healthcare for adolescent girls and strengthening India’s long-term strategy for reducing the burden of cervical cancer.
