The Indian Medical Association (IMA), in collaboration with Abbott in India, has launched Indian Immunisation Week from September 21 to 27, 2026, with a focus on improving awareness of adult immunisation and encouraging timely annual influenza vaccination. The initiative also addresses a practical issue faced in clinical settings—whether influenza vaccination should be postponed when a person has a fever or is recovering from an acute febrile illness.

The initiative has been introduced against the backdrop of low adult vaccination uptake in India. IMA's official campaign notes that influenza vaccination is frequently postponed when patients have an acute febrile illness and that the absence of clear guidance about when to vaccinate again can result in patients missing vaccination altogether. The organisation says its recommendations are intended to help physicians reassess eligible patients and provide vaccination at the earliest appropriate opportunity.

The campaign is therefore designed not only as a public awareness programme but also as a clinical education initiative for healthcare professionals. IMA says its expert recommendations were developed to provide physicians with guidance on the timing of influenza vaccination following acute febrile illness.

According to the campaign information, unnecessary postponement of influenza vaccination after fever can become a barrier to timely immunisation, particularly for people who have a higher risk of influenza-related complications. The broader information released with the initiative indicates that mild fever, in most situations, should not automatically result in vaccination being delayed, while people with moderate-to-severe illness may have vaccination deferred until recovery. The purpose is to allow the treating healthcare professional to consider the person's clinical condition and determine the appropriate timing of vaccination.

The guidance also encourages healthcare professionals to provide a specific follow-up or vaccination date when vaccination is temporarily deferred. This is intended to reduce the possibility that a patient who postpones vaccination during an illness does not return for immunisation later.

The campaign specifically highlights the importance of influenza vaccination for older adults and people living with chronic conditions, who can face a greater risk of complications from influenza. It also highlights vaccination during pregnancy and its potential role in protecting both pregnant women and their infants.

Indian Immunisation Week is being supported through several awareness and professional education activities. According to IMA, the campaign includes radio awareness programmes in five cities, media outreach, CME programmes in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai, and distribution of the vaccination guidance to healthcare professionals in clinical settings.
