The Gujarat government has established four autonomous boards under the Gujarat State Allied and Healthcare Council (GSAHC) to bring a more structured regulatory framework to allied and healthcare education and professional practice across the state. The new boards are expected to oversee areas ranging from undergraduate and postgraduate education to institutional assessment, professional ethics and registration.

The four boards are the Undergraduate Education Board, Post-Graduate Education Board, Assessment and Rating Board, and Ethics and Registration Board. Together, they will provide separate mechanisms for academic standards, institutional quality assessment, and professional registration within the allied healthcare sector.

The Undergraduate Education Board will be headed by Bhavna M. Vaidya, Associate Professor at M. V. M. Science and Home Science College, Rajkot. The Post-Graduate Education Board will be chaired by Dr Amar Vyas of B J Medical College. The Assessment and Rating Board will be headed by Dr Shraddha Jasmin Diwan (PT), lecturer at SBB College of Physiotherapy, SVP Hospital, Ahmedabad, while the Ethics and Registration Board will be led by Dr Manmitkaur A. Gill (PT), principal of Government Physiotherapy College, Surat.

The structure is intended to divide regulatory responsibilities according to specific functions. The education boards can focus on standards and academic programs, while the Assessment and Rating Board will deal with institutional evaluation and quality-related processes. The Ethics and Registration Board will address professional registration and ethical requirements. Subject specialists from individual allied healthcare disciplines are also expected to contribute to standardizing education and ensuring alignment with broader national frameworks.

The framework covers multiple allied healthcare disciplines, including physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology, nutrition sciences, ophthalmic care, occupational therapy, behavioral sciences, and medical radiology. This is significant because allied healthcare education involves a wide range of professional disciplines with different training requirements, clinical competencies, and practice settings.

The development also comes amid the wider implementation of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) framework. At the national level, the allied healthcare regulatory system is intended to establish common standards for education and professional practice across recognized allied and healthcare professions. Gujarat's state-level council and its specialized boards provide a mechanism for translating these regulatory requirements into education, institutional assessment, and professional registration within the state.

The creation of dedicated boards also follows earlier efforts in Gujarat to reorganize academic oversight for allied and healthcare programs. In December 2025, the Gujarat State Allied and Healthcare Council had raised concerns about the composition of a Gujarat University board of studies for allied and healthcare courses and called for discipline-specific boards involving appropriately qualified allied-health professionals.

According to the Gujarat State Allied and Healthcare Council, its broader mandate includes regulating, standardizing, and promoting standards of education and professional conduct in allied and healthcare services. The four-board structure therefore creates separate institutional mechanisms for education, assessment, and professional regulation rather than placing all functions under a single academic body. For colleges and students, the framework could affect areas such as curriculum implementation, institutional assessment, academic standards, and professional registration. For practicing allied healthcare professionals, the Ethics and Registration Board is particularly relevant because registration and professional conduct are important components of a regulated healthcare workforce.
