Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah addressed the PharmaInnova Awards Ceremony 2026 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where he spoke about India’s growing pharmaceutical and healthcare manufacturing capabilities and the need to accelerate research and innovation in the sector. During his address, Shah said India’s pharmaceutical industry is not only an important economic sector but also a strategic national asset. He emphasised that India should aim to become self-reliant in medicines while also strengthening its position as a global supplier of pharmaceutical products.

A major part of the address focused on the need for greater investment in pharmaceutical research and development. Shah urged pharmaceutical companies to support researchers, students, scientists and professionals working on innovative healthcare solutions. He highlighted the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma and MedTech (PRIP) Scheme as an important government initiative designed to encourage research and innovation in pharmaceuticals and medical technology. The scheme is intended to help develop new medicines and innovative medical technologies while strengthening India’s research ecosystem.

Shah stressed that companies should actively encourage meritorious students and researchers because sustained investment in scientific research would be essential for India to move forward in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. The Union Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to build a stronger medical device manufacturing ecosystem in India. He said initiatives are being developed to increase domestic production of healthcare equipment and reduce dependence on imports. According to his address, India is already manufacturing products such as ventilators, while the government is working towards creating an ecosystem capable of producing a much wider range of medical devices domestically, including advanced healthcare equipment.

The Bulk Drug Park and Medical Device Park initiatives were also highlighted as important components of this manufacturing strategy. Along with the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, these initiatives are intended to strengthen domestic production of pharmaceutical ingredients, medicines and medical devices. Shah referred to India’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic as an example of the country’s growing healthcare manufacturing capabilities. He highlighted India’s ability to develop and produce vaccines as well as manufacture PPE kits and N-95 masks during a period of significant global demand. He said the experience demonstrated the importance of having a strong domestic healthcare manufacturing base. Strengthening local production of medicines, medical equipment and other healthcare products could help India respond more effectively to future health emergencies while also supporting exports.

The address also placed emphasis on taking the Aatmanirbhar Bharat approach beyond domestic self-sufficiency. Shah said India should not only meet its own requirements for medicines but should also take responsibility for supplying quality pharmaceutical products to countries around the world. India’s pharmaceutical sector has therefore been positioned as an important part of the country’s broader economic and technological development. Greater investment in research, manufacturing infrastructure and innovation could help Indian companies develop more advanced products and compete in international markets. The event in Ahmedabad brought attention to the growing intersection of pharmaceutical science, medical technology, research, manufacturing and healthcare delivery. The emphasis on innovation and domestic production could create opportunities for pharmaceutical researchers, clinical research professionals, medical technology developers, startups and healthcare institutions involved in innovation.
